The Organization

Since 1971, the Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) has connected the people of Evansville, Indiana to work, school, healthcare, and community. Operating 18 fixed routes plus 15 paratransit and 3 microtransit service, METS moves over a million riders a year through its Downtown Terminal and manages day-to-day operations from its Administration & Maintenance Facility at 601 John Street.

Like every public transit agency, METS carries a dual communication mandate: keep riders informed and confident, and keep a dispersed workforce of operators, mechanics, and administrative staff aligned, all while meeting federal transparency requirements that come with FTA funding.

The Challenge

Transit communication never stands still. Federally mandated notices such as Title VI civil rights information must be visible to the public at all times. Security guidance needs to reach riders where they wait. Meanwhile, internal policies, procedures, and route detours have to reach employees quickly, without relying on break-room corkboards and printed memos that go stale the day they're posted.

METS needed a way to publish to both audiences, riders and employees, from one platform, update content in minutes instead of print cycles, and prove that required public notices were consistently displayed.

The Solution

METS deployed NoviSign's cloud-based digital signage platform across five screens spanning two facilities:

  • Three screens at the METS Downtown Terminal: two customer-facing displays showing Title VI civil rights information, security information, and rider alerts, plus one employee-facing screen rotating agency policies, operating procedures, upcoming events, and route detour notices.
  • One screen in the customer lounge at the Administration & Maintenance Facility, keeping riders and visitors informed with Title VI information, security messaging, and service updates while they wait.
  • One screen in the employee breakroom of the Administration & Maintenance Facility.

Here's a look at two of the Downtown Terminal's customer-facing displays in action:

Customer-facing NoviSign screen at the METS Downtown Terminal displaying a bilingual rider alert about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day schedule change

A customer-facing screen at the Downtown Terminal delivers a bilingual rider alert about the West Connection and USI service closure for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Customer-facing NoviSign screen at the METS Downtown Terminal promoting the Discounted Free Ride Program for elderly and disabled riders

Another customer-facing display promotes the METS Discounted Free Ride Program for elderly and disabled riders, including how to get a free discount card.

Because NoviSign is fully cloud-based, METS staff update any screen from a standard web browser. A compliance notice, a security advisory, or a detour alert can be pushed to the right audience in minutes: no IT ticket, no reprinting, no ladder.

Why It Works for a Transit Agency

  • Compliance made visible: Title VI and other federally required notices stay on-screen continuously, with scheduling that guarantees rotation, supporting FTA program requirements.
  • One platform, two audiences: separate playlists route the right content to customer-facing and employee-facing screens from a single dashboard.
  • Real-time agility: security information, rider alerts, and detours update instantly across locations.
  • Public-sector friendly: NoviSign is SOC 2 Type II certified, with the security posture government agencies require.
  • Built to scale: as METS grows, additional screens (at transfer points, shelters, or facilities) join the same account in minutes.

The Results

Riders at the Downtown Terminal and visitors to the customer lounge and front lobby now see current, compliant, professionally presented information at every visit. Employees get policy updates, event announcements, and detour notices the moment they're published, in the places they actually walk past every day. And METS administrators manage all of it centrally, replacing printed postings with a living communication channel.

"Digital signage lets us keep both our riders and our team informed in real time, from required Title VI information in our lobbies to detours and events for our employees, all managed from one simple platform."

Rick Wilson, Superintendent of Operations, METS
