This guide explains the auto-upgrade feature of the Android player app. Currently, this feature is not available for the native Windows player app. However, it is enabled by default for all other web-based player apps, including Chrome OS, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, and BrightSign.
Auto Upgrade for the Android App
What Is the Auto Upgrade Feature
The Auto Upgrade feature allows your Android player app to automatically update itself whenever a new version is released. This ensures your app stays up to date with the latest improvements and fixes—without needing to manually reinstall anything.
To use this feature, your Android device must be rooted (i.e., it must have “root” permissions), and the app must be installed from our official download website, not from the Google Play Store.
-
This feature is available starting from version 4.4.43-0-148 of the native Android player app.
-
The setting is called “Auto Upgrade”, and can be found under the “Player” block of the app settings.
-
By default, the Auto Upgrade setting is set to “off”. You can change it to “latest” to enable automatic updates.
Note: This feature is only available in the Android app. It is not supported in the native Windows player app. For web-based player apps (Chrome OS, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, and BrightSign), it is enabled by default.
How Do I Set It Up
To enable the Auto Upgrade feature on your Android device, follow the steps below:
1. Use the APK from Our Download Site
-
You must install the Android app from our download website, not from the Google Play Store.
-
The Play Store version does not support this feature.
2. Ensure Your Android Device Is Rooted
The Auto Upgrade feature requires root access on the device. This means your Android device must have “superuser” or “root” permissions.
Here’s how to check if your device is rooted:
-
Install a root checking app from the Google Play Store, like Root Checker.
-
Alternatively, install our APK and try changing the Auto Upgrade setting:
-
If you can change it without seeing an error, your device is rooted.
-
If you get an error, your device is not rooted.
-
Tip: Some devices are pre-rooted. Others may need rooting tools. If no tool works, you might need to ask the device manufacturer for a rooted firmware version.
3. Enable Auto Upgrade in the App
-
Open the NoviSign Android player app.
-
Navigate to Settings > Player.
-
Find the “Auto Upgrade” option.
-
Change it from “off” to “latest”.
4. Grant Superuser Access
When you switch the setting to “latest”, Android may prompt you with a message like:
“NoviSign Player is requesting Superuser access.”
You’ll have 3 options to answer: “This time only”, “Remember choice for 10 minutes” and “Remember choice forever”
- Choose the option: “Remember choice forever”
- Then tap “Allow”.
This ensures the app can upgrade automatically in the future, without needing your intervention.
What Happens Next & CMS Control
-
When a new app version is released (we usually announce this in our newsletter), we wait about 2 weeks and then automatically push the update to all rooted Android devices with Auto Upgrade set to “latest.”
-
The update process is seamless—no need to manually touch the device.
-
If you’re using the Studio CMS configuration feature, you get even more control:
-
Not only can you enable Auto Upgrade remotely
- You can also choose to lock the player to a specific version, which is not possible from the device settings itself.
