Chrome OS Overview

Chrome OS is (relatively) a young operating system started to appear in the market around 2011. This OS is powered by Google (like if Google was competing with themselves with their Android OS). Originally, it had a market store called “Chrome Web Store” with native apps for Chrome OS. Since 2022 there are no apps there, only Chrome extensions and alike.

Hence, today the only 2 ways to install an app on a Chrome OS device would be either as a webapp (URL) or as an Android app (may be installed only on new ChromeOS devices – which usually have End-of-Life). At the moment, NoviSign has only one way to be installed on Chrome devices: by using our webapp, which we call the HTML player app (and was adjusted especially for ChromeOS). We also refer this app in some places as the “WPlayer” (because its URL is https://app.novisign.com/wplayer).

For Chrome devices (which can be Chromebook, Chromebox, Chromebase – and in the past also Chromebit) to be served as a digital sign, you must put them in kiosk mode (which means, they’re supposed to run 24/7 as a dedicated app with no interruptions) and not in desktop mode (when you boot your Chrome device, login and find yourself in the desktop), where the app cannot run 24/7 (if you try, then the day after you will see that the app is not running anymore).

For getting the option for kiosk mode, you must use the Google Device Management Console (also known as “Google Console”), which is a kind of Google’s MDM to remotely control ChromeOS (and Android) units. That will require Google licenses, which you should purchase from your local Google vendor.
