A landmark building, a modern welcome

The New Mexico State Capitol — known as the Roundhouse — is one of the most distinctive government buildings in the United States and the only round state capitol in the country. Its circular architecture is a point of civic pride, but it also creates a genuine navigation challenge: with no clear front or back, visitors, staff, and lawmakers frequently struggle to find their way between offices, chambers, galleries, and public spaces across four floors.

Working with its trusted technology partner Sharp, the Capitol replaced its aging printed directory system with a modern, self-managed NoviSign digital wayfinding solution. Sharp facilitated the sale and coordinated the deployment; NoviSign delivered a professionally designed, out-of-the-box experience that Capitol staff can now update entirely on their own.

The kiosk welcome screen greets every visitor and opens the door to directory, events, building information, wayfinding, and art exhibits.

The Challenge

Static signage in a round building

Before going digital, the Capitol relied on traditional printed signage to guide people through the building. That approach carried real, recurring pain points:

• A round floor plan with no natural orientation, making it hard for visitors to understand where they were or how to reach their destination.
• Printed directories that required specialty paper stock, driving up the cost of every single update.
• High ongoing monthly costs to design, print, and physically replace signage each time a room assignment, office, or event changed.
• Slow turnaround — even a minor listing change meant reprinting and re-installing physical signs.
• No way to surface dynamic content such as an events calendar or building and art information on static signage.

The Solution

One platform, five interactive experiences

NoviSign and Sharp deployed an integrated digital wayfinding system built around two touchscreen kiosks at the main entrances and a network of digital directories on four floors — all managed through one cloud platform. From a single home screen, visitors can explore five purpose-built experiences.

Directory

A complete, searchable building directory lets visitors look up any representative, senator, or office and instantly see the room number and extension — organized into clear, tabbed categories.

Representatives, Senators, and Others are split into tabs, each row pairing a name with its room and extension — no more hunting a printed list.

Wayfinding Map

An interactive map plots turn-by-turn routes from a clear "You Are Here" marker to any destination. Visitors switch between floors, choose a location, and follow the highlighted path — with restrooms, entrances, and accessibility points all marked.

Get to Know Us

Beyond navigation, the kiosks double as a visitor education tool — sharing the building's history, the layout of its four levels, how the Legislature works, and the state symbols that make New Mexico unique.

Roundhouse layout, House and Senate facts, the Zia sun symbol, the Great Seal, and living state symbols — turning a wayfinding stop into a mini-museum.

Art Exhibits

The Capitol is also a museum, home to a collection spanning 600+ local artists. The Art Exhibits screen showcases current and upcoming exhibitions and highlights featured works on display throughout the building.

Rotating exhibitions and "In Focus" artifact spotlights keep the Capitol Art Collection in front of every visitor — updated by staff whenever a show changes.

Elevator Directories

Guidance on every floor

Complementing the entrance kiosks, the Capitol replaced its old static elevator-lobby directories with digital screens on four floors. Positioned where people pause and decide where to go next, each directory delivers:

• Per-floor listings for every office, chamber, and key location on that level.
• Building information that stays consistent from floor to floor.
• Real-time content — including date, time, and temperature — that a printed board could never show.
• Instant updates when a room assignment or listing changes, with no reprinting.

Professionally designed, effortless to maintain

From a setup standpoint, NoviSign provided the initial wayfinding and layout design — giving the Capitol a professionally designed, out-of-the-box solution that was ready to use from day one. There was no lengthy build phase and no need to assemble maps from scratch.

Just as important is what happens after go-live. To make ongoing edits, Capitol staff simply log in to NoviSign and apply their change. From updating the wayfinding map to a simple directory correction, the end user can quickly and easily handle updates on their own — without having to call Sharp, NoviSign, or a third-party IT company.
